Christopher Columbus Memorial Fountain (also known as Columbus Monument)
Washington, D.C., United States
Date of incident: 10/14/2002

Christopher Columbus Memorial Fountain (also known as Columbus Monument) was carved from Italian marble by Lorado Z. Taft; it was erected in Washington D.C.’s Union Station in 1912. In 1991, the statue was covered with red paint. On the morning of October 14th, 2002, red paint was again splattered on to the figures, and the words, “510 Years Oppression” and “510 Years Resistance” were spray painted at the base. The following day, at the 90th annual Columbus Day Memorial Celebration held at Union Station, two Native American protestors (one bearing a sign that read "Columbus was a murderer" and one who walked around the celebratory crowd shouting) were arrested for disorderly conduct and accused of the vandalism.
