Statue of Margaret Thatcher
Isleworth, West London, England
Date of incident: 07/03/2002

This 8 ft. tall marble statue of former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher was sculpted by Neil Simmons. It was commissioned in 1998 by the House of Commons Speaker’s Advisory Committee on Works of Art, and was unveiled in May 2002 by Thatcher herself, at the Guildhall Art Gallery in London. It was beheaded on July 3, 2002, by Paul Kelleher, as a protest against the “ills of the world’s political system”. The first attempt to destroy the statue was with a cricket bat, and when that failed, Kelleher used the metal stanchion from a crowd barrier. After successfully decapitating the statue, Kelleher waited for the police to come and arrest him. He was sentenced to three months in prison.
