The Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam and Kunstmuseum St.Gallen present Beyond the Manosphere. Masculinities Today. The international group exhibition was shown at the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam from 17 April to 2 August 2026, and now travels to Kunstmuseum St.Gallen from 3 October 2026 to 24 January 2027.

What does masculinity mean today? With the rise of the “manosphere” — a loose network of online spaces in which a dominant, misogynistic masculinity is asserted, amplified by the spread of Trumpism — the question has taken on new urgency. The exhibition’s title was chosen not to affirm the manosphere but to break it open: if we understand masculinity as a “sphere,” what can be recognised within it? Bringing together works that speak of power, dominance, and violence as much as of their subversion and reversal, the show opens a critical perspective — surfacing types, clichés, and cultural tropes, but also stories of love and desire. Drawing on works from the collections of the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam and Kunstmuseum St.Gallen alongside loans and new commissions, it examines masculinity as a vehicle and staging of power, and as a lived reality that can be contradictory, banal, unstable, and tender at once.

A catalogue is published by Bierke Books, designed by Sabo Day, with a curatorial essay by Melanie Bühler.
