Date of incident: 08/02/2001

This marble statue of Christopher Columbus holding a rolled map in his right hand was erected in 1952 at Junipero Serra Hall in Santa Barbara, California, by the Knights of Columbus. On August 2, 2001, it was beheaded and its pedestal was spray-painted with a peace sign, anarchist’s symbol, a heart, and the words, “Tell children the truth”. An upside down American flag was placed in front of the statue with the words, “Truth: 509 years of indigenous genocide.” The statue will be restored by the Knights of Columbus.
