Don Drumm, Solar Totem #1 (1970)

Solar Totem #1
Kent, Ohio, United States
Date of incident: 05/04/1970

Sculptor Don Drumm’s 15 foot, abstract, cor-ten steel sculpture, commissioned by the Kent State University, was erected on the campus in front of Taylor Hall. On May 4, 1970, the Ohio National Guard opened fire on students protesting the American invasion of Cambodia. Four students were killed and nine others were wounded. During the shooting, a bullet from a Guardsman’s rifle passed through Drumm’s steel sculpture, leaving a still visible hole. The events at Kent State were immortalized in Neil Young’s song “Ohio”.
