Christopher Columbus Statue
Honduras
Date of incident: 10/12/1997

On Columbus Day, October 12, 1997, Honduran Indians toppled a 6 ft statue of Christopher Columbus, broke its head off, and painted its hands red to symbolize blood. This was done in protest of the 505th anniversary of Columbus’s arrival. Protest leader, Candido Martinez said, ''These are 505 years that we are not celebrating because the truth is that for 505 years we have been executed, our ancestors were assassinated.'' The statue was taken to the University of Honduras, where it will be restored.
