On April 1, 2003, the central cenotaph at the Étaples Military Cemetery, the largest Commonwealth War Graves Commission cemetery in France, was vandalized. Red slogans were spray painted on the cenotaph, including “Rosbeefs [British] go home", "Saddam will win and he will make you bleed", “Death to the Yankees” and "Dig up your rubbish, it is contaminating our soil".
