Statue of Josip Broz Tito
Krumrovec, Croatia
Date of incident: 12/26/04

A statue of Josip Broz Tito, the leader of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (from 1945-1980) was sculpted by Antun Augustincic and unveiled in 1948 in Kumrovec, Croatia (Tito’s home town). After Tito’s death in 1980, many ex-Yugoslavs and Croatian nationalists denounced Tito for his repressive policies and disregard for human rights. On December 26, 2004, the head and right shoulder of the statue were broken off in an explosion and the entire figure was toppled from its plinth. Some nearby houses were also damaged in the explosion. The Croatian government transported the statue to the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb and publicly promised a full restoration.
