Magic Carpet Ride
Cardiff, California, United States.
Date of incident: 08/20/2007

The Cardiff Botanical Society commissioned sculptor Matthew Antichevich to create a bronze statue of a surfer for the city of Cardiff, CA. The 12 foot tall bronze and granite sculpture was unveiled on July 22, 2007 and was called “Magic Carpet Ride”. On August 20, 2007, as an anti-war protest, it was hooded in a black fabric with a red fabric draped around the neck to symbolize blood. This follows an earlier alteration made on the statue when local surfers protesting the sculpture’s effeminate appearance and unrealistic pose dressed the statue in a blue Mexican wrestler’s mask, a bikini top, and pink skirt.
