Albert Park, Auckland, Australia Date of incident: 02/06/1987 |
This marble statue of Sir George Grey was sculpted by F.J. Williamson and was erected at the corner of Grey’s Avenue and Queen Street in Auckland, Australia, in 1904. In 1922 it was moved to Albert Park. The supporting column behind the figure is carved with Maori designs. On Waitangi Day (February 6th) in 1987, the head of the statue was broken off and stolen, allegedly by Maori activists. Roderick Burgess sculpted a replacement head. |
