Statue of King William |
Trinity College, Dublin, Ireland Date of incident: 1710, 1714, 1929 |
On July 1, 1701, the 11th anniversary of the Battle of the Boyne, an equestrian statue of King William sculpted by Grinling Gibbons was unveiled on College Green, across from Trinity College. In 1710, 3 Trinity students daubed the statue in mud and stole the scepter. They were expelled and made to stand before the statue bearing a placard stating their offence. 4 years later, the scepter was stolen again and broken but those responsible for the damage were not found. In 1929, the statue was blown up by IRA and was completely destroyed. |
