A 33 ft. obelisk was erected on 1867 or 1868, shortly after the Civil War, in recognition of the soldiers who fought at the battles of Valverde and Glorieta Pass. The inscription also states that it honors "the heroes who have fallen in the various battles with savage Indians...” On August 7, 1973, the word “savage” was chiseled off in protest by a “young man with blond hair tied in a pony tail and wearing a hard hat”.*
