The George Bush Presidential Monument |
Houston, Texas, United States Date of incident: 02/10/2005 |
On December 2, 2004, a 1.7 million dollar monument to former U.S. President George Bush Sr. was unveiled at Sesquicentennial Park near the Wortham Center in Houston, Texas. The monument features a stone plaza with 4 bronze bas-relief plaques depicting non-partisan scenes from Bush’s life, an 8 ft. bronze sculpture of him, and quotations from his speeches, timelines, and visitors’ benches. The monument was privately funded and was donated to the city. On Feb. 10, 2005 the sculpture was doused in red paint. Unsurprisingly the statue has witnessed many anti-war / anti-Bush administration protests, including a local anarchist group’s “Inaugurate Yourself, Reclaim the Streets party” held weeks prior to this paint incident. |
